Last week I directed you to a site where you could learn how to use the Twitter advanced search features to target visitors including day trippers – people in population centers within 100 miles of your small town.
Today we’ll look at how the Google Local Business Center can help you attract those prospective visitors living close by. And it’s free!
Go to Google Places. You’ll be asked to sign in using your Google account. That’s your Gmail address and password, or the email address and password you set up when creating your Google Account.
If you haven’t set up a Google account, do it now. You saw the list of free business services on the services page, each of which you can access with nothing more than a Google account.
Back at the Local Business Center page, click “Add a New Business” and fill out the forms. As the form header states, you will be able to add photos, videos, payment options, and even coupons. Be ready to write a short description of your business.
When you finish filling out the forms, you will be alerted to watch for a post card in the mail with a verification pin number.
The post card, which will arrive within a week, will give you instructions for entering a pin#. A day later your listing will be added to the Google map for your area.
From now on, you will be able to log into your dashboard and change your listing, add coupons, and view some basic analytics showing how many people have used your new map listing.
Be sure to bookmark your Local Business Center Dashboard. It doesn’t seem to be accessible directly from your Gmail page.
This is one online marketing activity that doesn’t require much upkeep. Mark on your “to do” calendar to change photos several times a year, and be sure to take down any expired coupons you’ve posted.
