Coos Bay’s Social Media Strategy to Attract Visitors… One At a Time

by Joanne Steele on January 13, 2011

I picked up a great social media success story on Stikky Media today that made me laugh out loud!

Coos Bay, Oregon has a good system for monitoring social media sites, obviously, because the following story Welcome Allan Jenkins to Coos Bay signhappened almost two years ago when many small towns had no social media strategy at all.

Anyway, they discovered a tweet from a couple of guys who asked for some travel advice on Twitter.

Coos Bay answered, “You should drop in for the night.”

As the story was reported, the guys sent back a little joke, which Coos Bay responded to with a tour of the town on Flickr and a YouTube video.

“Wow! “You might think. “All that time to attract one guy and his friend!”

On social media, communicating well with ONE is compelling communication with us all

This whole conversation was very public on Coos Bay’s social media sites.  When they singled out Allan Jenkins for special attention, everyone who saw the interaction had to be impressed. Coos Bay made it onto more visitors’ “must visit” lists than just Mr. Jenkins.

Coos Bay spoke to the “Allan Jenkins” in all of us looking for friendly small towns, and discovering the extra special care they were willing to give to one guy.. just like us.

That special message to Allan Jenkins was a better social media strategy  for Coos Bay than turning out 100 of the typical town features, amenities and events descriptions that pack  the social media posts on most CVB pages.

Its excellent social media strategy. And it’s a great example of sharing a benefit to an exactly perfect customer.

Read Allan’s own story about the incident and get his suggestions for  “social media at its small town best.”

Think about it… this FREE social media interaction happened almost two years ago, and Coos Bay is still getting attention for it.

Yup. I write a lot about social media strategies. Did you see the two most recent posts on the subject?
