It’s Time For Small Local Businesses To Get Acquainted With Twitter

...maybe not "love" yet, at beginning to like a little more.

I’m getting better at not burdening you overworked small local business owners with details about the latest shiny new social media toy before it’s important to integrate into your marketing. (You’ll notice I haven’t written about Google+ yet)

But, I get it. With the new changes, Twitter MAY have some uses and benefits for small local business owners.

You’re not going to be seeing all the changes immediately – they’ll be rolled out over the next few weeks, but here’s Brian Solis’ blog post explaining what’s to come:  The New, New Twitter and What It Means to You and Your Business

Here’s why you may want to reconsider Twitter:

1. Twitter is growing in importance even for small local businesses, and will be seamlessly integrated with mobile.

Your customers using smartphones will see the same thing on their phones and tablets as they see on their computer screens. They’ll like that, and you don’t have to do anything extra.

2. Twitter has matured tremendously. People – your customers – are using it to get and share valuable information. There are still users who tweet their every move, but you can simply unfollow those who clutter up your stream.

3. You can easily integrate it with other things you’re doing online, and use a third party service like Hootsuite to track your Twitter stream and schedule your tweets.

You can set it to automatically tweet your blog headlines with a link. And you can easily embed a tweet on your website, and people can respond to it without leaving your site.

4. It’s easy to set up, and with only 140 characters possible, tweeting feels more like having a conversation than writing a discourse on something.

Tweets are snap announcements, comments or retweets of someone elses’ interesting announcement or comment. In a sense, it’s just a different way of having a conversation. You toss an idea or thought out and see if it catches on – which means you get retweets, follows, or replies.

Tweets, like everything else on the web, never die, so it’s vital to follow the rule of never tweeting anything you wouldn’t want your preacher or mother to read.

I realized that now, Twitter deserves a Module of its own at Take Control Of Your Internet Marketing. It’s not the first and most important social media to undertake, but it now must be considered.

Great article on Twitter Joanne! I have been a big time fan of Twitter and use it extensively. However I have not been a big promoter of Twitter to many of our small rural businesses here in Arkansas because we rank pretty low on the Twitter useage totem pole. However for our rural tourism related businesses who want to attract folks from outside the state it has a lot of opportunity.
Of course for our small business clients, using Twitter like any social media effectively takes more than just setting up an account and letting the tweets fly! Hope you get a good module in on Twitter I can share with my folks
